What is the variable feed-in tariff for solar panels?

If you own solar panels and produce more electricity than you consume, the surplus energy is fed back into the grid. In Belgium, this surplus can be remunerated thanks to the variable feed-in tariff. This tariff is based on the evolution of energy prices, allowing you to effectively compensate your surplus electricity injected into the grid.

How does the variable feed-in tariff work?

Since November 2021, it has been essential for solar panel owners to use a smart or bi-directional meter. This device accurately measures the amount of excess electricity you inject into the grid, making it easier to calculate your financial compensation.

The term "variable" indicates that the feed-in tariff fluctuates according to energy market prices. Unlike fixed tariffs, the variable feed-in tariff is adjusted every month. When energy prices rise, you receive higher compensation for your surplus; on the other hand, if prices fall, the compensation also decreases.

The benefits of variable feed-in tariffs

How is your compensation calculated?

The amount of your compensation is based on the data provided by your smart meter. The compensation is determined by a tariff formula that takes into account the energy market index. This system adjusts the tariff each month to reflect current market conditions.

Self-consumption or variable feed-in tariff?

To maximize your savings, we recommend that you consume your electricity mainly during the day, when your solar panels produce the most. Take advantage of the variable feed-in tariff for the excess electricity you reinject, which can effectively reduce your energy bill.
